The Advantage of Sodium-ion batteries

2024 04/28

Sodium-ion batteries (NIBs, SIBs, or Na-ion batteries) are several types of rechargeable batteries, which use sodium ions (Na+) as its charge carriers. In some cases, its working principle and cell construction are similar to those of lithium-ion battery (LIB) types, but it replaces lithium with sodium as the intercalating ion.
As a new material in the battery field, sodium-ion batteries are characterized by their ability to generate less instantaneous heat and a relatively low temperature rise under short circuit conditions. Sodium-ion batteries have a much higher thermal runaway temperature than lithium batteries and therefore perform well in safety tests. After tests such as overcharge and
over-discharge, short circuit, acupuncture and extrusion, the sodium-ion battery did not catch fire or explode, showing excellent safety performance. This has led to expectations that sodium-ion batteries can replace lithium batteries in the future.
Compared with traditional lithium-ion batteries, the advantages of sodium-ion batteries are their abundance of sodium ions, low cost and high energy density. In addition, sodium-ion batteries also have good safety performance and can operate over a wide temperature range without the need for additional protective measures. In the field of sodium-ion battery research, one of the main challenges is to find a suitable electrode material.
